Kodo Millet (Kodari)

Kodo Millet is a popular fast or upvas food in some parts of India. Also know as (Kodari). The millet is certainly superior to rice, gluten free and rich in fiber, vitamins and minerals. It is a traditional food which closely resembles rice and helps in weight loss. It is easily digestible and is rich in phytochemicals and antioxidants which help in preventing different lifestyle diseases. Kodo millet is a good substitute to rice or wheat. Protein, fiber, and mineral content are much higher than the major cereals like rice. It can be cooked just like rice or ground into flour. It provides balanced nutrition, unlike polished white rice.

Ancient Indian medicine ayurveda classifies Kodo millet as langhana, which means bringing lightness to the body and is included under the category of Trina Dhanya Varga – (grains that are produced by grass like plants). It is termed as a wholesome food, prized for its medicinal, therapeutic and culinary properties and is recommended for diabetics, to beat fatigue, heal wounds faster. Being cold in nature, it increases vata dosha but balances issues caused due to kapha and pitta doshas.
